Artificial Sweetener Aspartame Labeled a Possible Cancer Risk

The synthetic sweetener aspartame has now been classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (hazard level Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an arm of the World Health Organization (WHO). The ruling is based on a small number of peer-reviewed, published scientific research and evidence from human and animals studies linking aspartame to cancer.

Aspartame is contained in thousands of consumer products sold in the U.S., including Diet Coke and Mars’ Extra chewing gum. Previous WHO rulings have forced manufacturers to change recipes and sparked waves of lawsuits. This ruling will likely be no less controversial; the International Sweeteners Association has already made a stand that the World Health Organization is basing their new labeling requirement on spurious research.
