Benzene in Hand Sanitizers

A recent study conducted by an independent pharmacy and lab analyzed more than 260 brands of hand sanitizer and found that 44 contained benzene, a toxic chemical* that causes cancer in humans.  The pharmacy issued a citizen’s petition to the FDA as a result of the research, calling on the agency to recall the products found to have unacceptable levels of benzene, conduct its own investigation and revisit its guidelines for hand sanitizers.

.

*The study reportedly found 21 products above the interim FDA limit for benzene and another 23 that contained between 0.1 and 2 parts per million of benzene. One product, ArtNaturals hand sanitizer, had 16.1 parts per million of the chemical — over eight times the allowed limit, the study found.

FDA Warns of Hand Sanitizer Brand With ‘Unacceptable Levels’ of Cancer-Causing Chemicals

Certain ArtNaturals hand sanitizers contain benzene, acetaldehyde, and acetal contaminants.

“Consumers who own any ArtNaturals hand sanitizers—which have been sold on Amazon and at Walmart—should stop using them immediately, the FDA warns. “Do not pour these products down the drain or flush them,” the alert reads; instead, they should ideally be disposed of in a hazardous waste container.”
